Recommendation 6.5

Transparency and Discoverability

In determining datasets for public release, a central government agency in each jurisdiction with overarching policy responsibility for data should offer a public process whereby datasets or combinations of datasets can be nominated, with a public interest case made, for release.

A list of requested datasets, and decisions regarding dataset release or otherwise, should be transparent and published online — in the Commonwealth’s case, on data.gov.au.

Government response:

The Government agrees with this recommendation.

The interim National Data Commissioner (NDC) will develop a process to enable nominations from the public to identify public sector datasets for release, to be launched by February 2018. The Government agrees that decisions regarding use and availability of data should be transparent, and the NDC will publish a list of requested datasets on data.gov.au.

The Australian Government will work with States and Territories to establish similar approaches by June 2018.
